Asheville Real Estate Climate & Weather Center~

Weather Forecast | Weather Maps | Weather Radar | Hurricane Center

When considering buying Real Estate in Asheville NC and the surrounding areas, an important factor to consider is the overall seasonal weather patterns that we've come to expect in the Blueridge Mountains.  In providing you a concierge experience as you buy a new Luxury Home Asheville NC, be it one in a Gated or Golfing Community, a new Condominium or townhouse, or just an investment property, climate expectations is an all-important variable about which you need to be aware.  To only discover the climate after you have moved here could be a great disappointment to some.

Additionally, please be advised that the estimated population for Asheville is approximately 69,000 in the city and 215,000 in the county.  Further, Asheville’s USA-Metropolitan Statistical Area (USA-MSA) is currently estimated at 386,000.

Yearly Perspective:  We enjoy a temperate climate throughout the year, with short and mild winters with Daytime highs in the wintertime are in the 50s-60s with lows in the 20s-30s.  Indeed, the four-season temperate climate with average snowfall of only 13 inches makes year-round living easy.  Average elevation is 2,165 feet above sea level; 2100 to 3600 feet around Asheville and adjoining neighborhoods.  Surrounding mountain elevations are higher with Mount Mitchell at 6,685 feet, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, which is just an hour away from Asheville. Because of this broad range of elevations and corresponding climates and plant growth, the area is one of the most biodiverse in the United States as well as in the world.

Seasonal Outlook:  Seasons in the Southern Appalachia's provide for an extended spring-summer-fall axis period that is warm but not too hot, and always with cooler more comfortable temperatures at night. Daytime Highs in the summertime are in the 80's with a week or two of 90s, while lows are in the 60s at night.  Being in the Mountains, Asheville always has a calm breeze blowing through the forests and glens, and only during our refreshing thunderstorms does it get slightly "windy."

Spring-Summer:  During the spring and summer months, anticipate scattered rain and thunderstorms in the mountains in the afternoon and evening  which keeps us Green!  Despite the amount of rain, which is usually at night, expect more than enough sunny days all year long.  This generally means, therefore, that most days are sunny, or in the least party cloudy---so that even our rainy days are generally broken with sun!  In fact, you will note that below, our Humidity is always lower in the afternoon, cooling things off just in time for the lightning bugs to chorus wonderfully around dusk as they head to the treetops. Alternatively, High Morning humidity with corresponding morning low temperatures allows for dew on the grass and welcomed cooling morning breezes in the summer.

Fall:  Expect the leaves to change around mid October but remain on the trees right through Thanksgiving, as continuing mild temperatures generally enable a wonderfully long and extended Indian Summer in the Southern Mountains of the Appalachia running right through 'till November.  And as this is "Mountain Apple Country," the warm days and cool nights make the cider run sweeter and richer during our long harvest season!  Also, expect the sky to be the bluest you've ever seen, so blue, they've named it "Carolina Blue!"

Winter:  Because of our southern climate, winters are relatively short and mild, allowing for cold nights but mild sunny days, and with relatively little snow fall in and around Asheville as is shown in the statistical tables below.  But the Ski resorts in the the higher elevations will not disappoint!  Expect the last frost by the end of March, though occasionally, mid-April can usher in some below freezing nights, so be careful of of what you plant in your garden during these weeks....  And then the long spring-summer-fall axis returns in all its mountain glory!
